This past December, ModernThink partnered with The Chronicle of Higher Education to create a free report on workplace quality based on the past 9 years of data from the Great Colleges to Work For® program. This report was circulated to college and university presidents nationwide. It explored how college and university leaders play a valuable role in creating a great academic work environment by:

  • Fostering collaboration
  • Embracing diversity
  • Communicating a shared vision on campus
  • Creating a stronger team spirit

In this report, you will find valuable data and insights, along with steps that other college and universities have taken to reach their full potential as a great workplace.

Today’s college and university leaders must balance the evolving needs of students, faculty, and staff with many competing demands – making it difficult to manage and sustain workplace excellence. In an effort to recognize institutions that excel, The Chronicle of Higher Education and ModernThink invite institutions to participate in the Great Colleges program. With opportunities in 12 categories, special acknowledgement goes to colleges that received multiple awards. These are named as Honor Roll institutions – earning them recognition as the best workplaces in higher education.

Now entering its 10th year, Great Colleges to Work For® provides hundreds of institutions with the critical data and information they need to reach their full potential as a great place to work – including insights into faculty/staff engagement, workplace excellence, and human capital risk management.

Through our survey, we’ve been able to identify a number of differentiating qualities of truly great workplaces. One overarching theme is the critical role senior leaders play in the stewardship of an institution’s culture. In an effort to continue this important work and support your institution, we would like to share some of the key findings, insights, and best practices from the Great Colleges program.

Here’s what we’ve found.
